Pakistan's History. Pakistan's history dates back to ancient times, with the Indus Valley Civilization having a significant presence in the region. The region has also been ruled by various empires, including the Achaemenid Empire, the Maurya Empire, and the Mongol Empire. The Mughal Empire, which ruled from the 16th to the 18th centuries, also had a major impact on the region. In the 19th century, the region became a part of the British Empire, and remained under British rule until 1947. During this time, there were set overall movements for independence, including the Pakistan Movement, which called for the creation of an independent Muslim state in the region. In 1947, the British withdrew from the region and Pakistan was created as an independent state. Initially, Pakistan consisted of two parts: East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) and West Pakistan.
